Founder of Planning at J. Walter Thompson / J. Walter Thompson Worldwide
It is widely accepted that Stephen King was one of the founders of the Planning Discipline as we know it today. He started his career at JWT in 1957 and by 1968 he had set up and was running the first ever Planning Department, something which was taken up quickly by other offices around the Network. Stephen King believed in rigorous research and concrete strategy behind creative execution. He developed ‘toolkits’ for his Planners to help them put theory into practice, something which is continued to this day. Alongside all of this, King wrote prize-winning papers and sat on numerous panels and external committees. He ended his career at JWT after 31 years, but went on to be a non-executive director of WPP.
